The Season ahead
Bolton Wanderers fans and players should be feeling extremely optimistic for the up coming 2010/11 season. With the Gary
Megson era finally at an overdue end, the Owen Coyle bandwagon can move forward and progress under his first full season at
the club with the expectation of a top-ten finish very much a reality.
Coyle has so far been astute in the transfer market. The signings of Robbie Blake and in particular, Martin Petrov, on two
frees represent fantastic coups for club. With the likely and impending arrival of Marcos Alonso, a Real Madrid 18 year-old
full back, the Bolton Wanderers side looks to have a brilliant balance about it with youthful exuberance and level-headed
experience. With a strong core of battle hardened players such as Kevin Davies, Fabrice Muamba and Gary Cahill alongside the
flair and elegance of players such as Lee Chung Yong and Martin Petrov, Coyle’s side can look to play a more attacking and
dominating game.

After Owen Coyle had replaced Gary Megson in January 2010, Wanderers rarely performed badly. Impressive performances
against the likes of Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in a controversial 4-2 defeat alongside impressive victories away at
Stoke City very much showed the potential capabilities of a club that were once battling it out with the big boys under Sam
Allardyce.
Much of the success or failure of the 2010/11 season will be determined in the coming weeks, leading to the closure of the
transfer window. If Bolton are able to hold on to Gary Cahill and Lee Chung Yong, a successful season is very much possible.
Gary Cahill, a phenomenally talented central defender, who arguably should have been in the England squad in South Africa,
will be key to Bolton’s season. With talent and composure on the ball similar to that of Rio Ferdinand with the strength and
bravery of John Terry, Cahill is very much the complete defender. With seven goals in all competitions for Bolton in the 2010
season including Bolton Wanderers’ goal of the season against Manchester City, Cahill is one of the most talented players at
the club and one of the most gifted defenders in the country.

Under Owen Coyle’s first full season at the club, relegation should be very much a distant threat with the opportunity of a
top ten finish a realistic target, particularly if Coyle is able to find a goalscorer to partner Kevin Davies. Davies has
been in his best goal-scoring form of his Bolton career finding the net a total of 19 times in his last two seasons, and if
he is able to continue this record with a more effective partner than Johan Elmander, Wanderer’s fans optimism for the season
can be fully justified.
