Joe Cole - just another mercenary

Contract negotiations between Joe Cole and Chelsea went on all season last term, with Cole insisting he wanted to stay put:

“I want nothing more than to stay at Chelsea, I love it here,” he said.  But Joe did want something more than a future at Chelsea - money, and lots of it.

On Monday it was announced that he had signed for Liverpool. Fair enough you may think, Cole has moved to a big club, and will surely get more game time than at Chelsea...but if you examine the move a little closerit is plain to see that Cole is just another mercenary.

Call me old-fashioned, but I think that Cole should have shown some loyalty and taken what Chelsea offered him. This was reportedly around £60,000 a week - not too shabby, especially considering he has had terrible luck with injuries. I actually think he has spent more time picking up extra cash as a sky pundit making mundane, non-controversial comments ala his customary ‘Yeah the lads done good’, than actually playing for Chelsea since his last big injury in early 2009.

When asked about the situation, Ancelotti said “The problem was economic,” said Ancelotti. “It was a problem between
the club and Joe Cole, not me. We spoke about this but when the problem is with money, it is not my problem.”  'Nuff said.
If Joe really did want to change clubs for footballing reasons then Liverpool would not have been his destination.  Arsenal, Spurs and United were the interested parties, and instead of going  to one of the other ‘top four’ clubs in the country who could also offer Joe Champions League football, he opted for Liverpool.  Why? Because Liverpool agreed to match his demands and he bit their hand off. He moved simply for the salary - there is no other explanation, and ‘footballing reasons’ do not come into the equation.

He wanted this much money!!

Liverpool may historically be a big club but they are not currently the force they once were.  They finished 7th last season,  a position I think they are unlikely to improve on unless they make some big signings and hold onto their key players in  Gerrard, Torres and Mascherano, with the latter two generally expected to move on.

Cole’s pathetic attempts to justify his move, claiming that the move “was a no-brainer because they are the biggest club in
the country” are nothing short of laughable.

"Now spell 'negotiations' Joe..."

After this drawn-out saga, I no longer have an ounce of respect for Cole and put him the same bracket as other recent sell -uts such as Barry and Tevez, except Joe is even more deplorable as he had a larger number of top clubs after him than the Man City duo did, and still chose to sell out.

Shame on you Joe.
